Several weeks ago, I noticed it was mid-March and my 2017 car tags still hadn’t come in the mail. My car registration expires April 26th each year. I knew the DMV had already cashed my check for $160, yet day after day of checking the mail and nothing…
Until one Friday afternoon after work an envelope from the DMV arrived in the mailbox!
I literally shrieked with excitement and practically did a backflip. My registration was 5 days from expiring and my tags had finally arrived! The relief I felt in my heart was a great feeling.
I tore open the envelope as fast as I could. In my head, I could already visualize the turquoise-green sticker marked ‘2017’ in my hands.
As I pulled the folded up paper out of the envelope, I only saw white. This confused me as one usually sees the sticker right away…
Not this time.
The piece of paper was literally folded like a normal business letter. As I opened it, I re-read the same sentence over and over again.
We have received your application to renew your vehicle registration. However, it is incomplete and your sticker and registration card cannot be issued until the item(s) listed below are received by DMV.

  • E-mission Recall Proof of Correction.
    • This vehicle has been recalled by the manufacturer under Emissions Recall Program ELF. Proof of correction must be obtained from an authorized dealership.
WTF? I didn’t even know what the hell an e-mission was. I remember repeating out loud ‘I’m so confused’ about 87x.
Total defeat began to set in as I literally began to pout – kid status. (Not something I am proud of). In my defense, I pay all my bills on time so this completely blind sided me.

We immediately called Lexus and scheduled an appointment for the following Tuesday. Lexus ended up having my car for 5 days and needing to completely re-build my engine. My car failed every test under the ‘recall correction,’ which freaked me out; but Lexus took care of me. (Per usual).

The Recall Proof of Correction was mailed to the DMV and we received the 2017 tags on 5/13/2016.

Waiting 2+ months was not easy, but it definitely reminded me life won’t always go smoothly- even when I follow all the rules 😉
